Habits to Make You Happier and Healthier

Happiness has taken on a different look these days. What we used to think would make us happy, has probably gotten simplified, whether we liked it, or not.

Right now, happiness might look more like contentment to a lot of us, and that’s just fine. Maybe a super-clean closet makes you happy now or making a home-cooked meal is lighting your fire (er..stove) at the moment. Whatever brings you peace in a crazy time, is what we’re striving for.

Turns out that habits aren’t always bad habits. There are some habits that are good, and making them a part of your daily routine, makes them even better!

You may have never thought about it, but smiling can actually make you happy! When you smile, your brain releases dopamine, which makes you even happier. While it would be nice to walk around with a legit smile on your face all day long, smiling when you’re a bit low, can cause that dopamine release, and you guessed it—turn that frown upside-down!

Try smiling at yourself in the mirror each morning. If you can’t “see yourself” doing that, maybe smile at that neighbor you see every day, on your way out of the house. Making a habit of smiling more, really can turn it into a daily habit.

Speaking of feeling happy, turns out that exercise isn’t just for your mind; it’s also great for reducing stress, depression, and boosting self-esteem. Who couldn’t use that? The best part? It only takes a small change in physical activity to make a big difference. No triathlons necessary, unless they make you happy of course.

The trick to incorporating exercise into your daily routine is to not overexert. This means not diving into a strenuous workout, ending up feeling achy and frustrated. There are lots of great ways to incorporate exercise into your life, gradually. Take a walk after dinner each night, or check out some online beginner’s yoga. Five minutes of stretching each morning is the perfect way to prepare your body, and mind for the upcoming day.

Another thing you might need to focus on is how much sleep you’re getting, or as is the case for many of us, how much sleep you’re not getting. Getting enough sleep is vital to our health,  mental, and emotional well-being. Most of us need between seven and eight hours of sleep to properly function. If you find yourself craving a mid-day nap, it could be a sign you aren’t getting adequate sleep.

So, how can you build a better night’s sleep? Try writing down how many hours you sleep each night, and how well-rested you actually feel in the morning. Review what you wrote after about a week. This could provide some serious insight into your sleep habits.

Speaking of habits, try to make a habit of going to bed at the same time each night; even on weekends. Add in an hour to wind-down before bed. Maybe a warm bath or a good book is the trick. Whatever you do to unwind, avoid eating anything heavy, or drinking right before bed.

Having life become simpler can be a good thing. As a matter of fact, it can be a great thing, depending on how you look at it. Take that extra time you may have now, and put it to good use. Smile more, exercise more, and get more rest. These are just a few simple habits that will get you in the habit of feeling happy.
